When the first “Iron Man” opened in May of 2008, it catapulted Robert Downey Jr. to incredible heights as an A-list box office star while firmly establishing Marvel Studios as a Hollywood force to be reckoned with.
In an unprecedented move, the four Marvel films that followed — “The Incredible Hulk,” “Iron Man 2,” “Thor” and “Captain America” — were all huge hits that also served to set-up the big daddy of them all: “The Avengers,” which now stands behind “Avatar” and “Titanic” as the third-highest grossing movie of all time ($1.5 billion worldwide).
So, where does Downey’s billionaire industrialist Tony Stark go from here? Why, “Iron Man 3,” of course!
After directing the first two installments, Jon Favreau returns as a producer (and a co-star, playing Tony Stark’s right-hand man Happy Hogan), while “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” writer/director Shane Black steps behind the camera for the third installment.
“Iron Man 3” opens May 3, 2013.
