With just about six month to go until “Star Trek Into Darkness” beams into theaters (on May 17, 2013), Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot pulled the lid off their stealth campaign with a wealth of new footage: a short teaser was released the first week of December, and the first 9 minutes of the 3-D movie can be seen before “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” in 288 IMAX theaters.

And now, here’s a brand new trailer that reminds us just how much we missed the brave crew of the Starship Enterprise. It’s been 3 1/2 long years since the 2009 reboot won over critics, fans and general moviegoers, making it not just a great “Star Trek” movie, but a great movie period.

The new trailer doesn’t reveal much, other than the fact that “Star Trek Into Darkness” looks pretty epic — much more so than any other previous feature with the words “Star Trek” in the title. It also appears to have a much darker tone (hence the title) than previous “Treks,” as the filmmakers are clearly going for “The Dark Knight” approach (hey, nothing wrong with that!).

And just who exactly is the baddie played by Benedict Cumberbatch? Could it be Khan, which had been widely speculated elsewhere on the web for quite some time? At a recent press day for the preview, the cast and crew would only reveal that Cumberbatch’s character is a terrorist within the Federation who puts Kirk, Spock, McCoy and the rest of the Enterprise crew to the ultimate test. Again, it sounds pretty epic.

“Into Darkness” certainly has a lot to live up to, but after the 2009 reboot exceeded all of my hopes and dreams, it’s only logical to assume that the sequel will top it in every way.
